‘Ping Pong Music’ is a trio for three players on one five-octave marimba that was written in 2025.
Program Notes:
The inspiration for ‘Ping Pong Music’ came from a few different sources. Its initial foundation was as an experiment to see how much a purely acoustic work could emulate the sounds of electronic music–this can be observed in the artificially replicated delay effects, randomized arpeggiation, and the electronic dance influence throughout the work. The imagery behind the piece was instead inspired by the play of my young nieces and nephew, who would often disrupt my composing to have their uncle play with them–happily I might add. Their vibrant and chaotic energy seemed to me as if it would ‘ping pong’ off the walls. This piece was commissioned by Robert Van Sice for the Percussion Collective.
